Epidemiological Pain ResearchThe Pain Epidemiology Program, led by Dr Fiona Blyth, has two major streams: exploring the broader public health impact of pain problems in the general population; and the application of epidemiological methods in pain research. Areas of research include pain problems in older people (pain as a risk factor for falls in the elderly, pain and function in older men, self-management of pain in older populations), chronic post-surgical pain, and the application of epidemiological methods in measuring psychosocial risk factors for pain. Parts of the Pain Epidemiology Program are undertaken collaboratively with the University of Sydney Centre for Education and Research in Ageing. Dr. Blyth is also Honorary Reader for the Aberdeen Pain Research Collaboration (Epidemiology Group), School of Medicine, University of Aberdeen, Scotland where she collaborates on research into the role of early life influences on adult pain, and musculoskeletal pain problems in older people living in rural/remote areas.
