Mechanisms underlying pelvic visceral pain

Assoc Prof Janet Keast and Dr Peregrine Osborne have a research program funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) USA because of their particular expertise in research into pelvic pain problems, such as pain in the urinary bladder (eg. "interstitial cystitis“ a frequent and severe pain problem in women). This program is revealing important differences in pain pathways, mechanisms of increased activity in ˜pain nerves", and factors that modify such activity. New targets may enable new effective treatments for this currently untreatable problem.
