Research interests

Neuropathic pain, particularly following spinal cord injury. Previous work includes studies of the mechanisms and management of pain following spinal cord injury. These include studies investigating spinal and thalamic mechanisms contributing to pain, prevalence, characteristics and classification of spinal cord injury pain and oral and intrathecal drug treatment for the management of pain following spinal cord injury. Current work is focusing on brain mechanisms contributing to neuropathic pain following spinal cord injury using functional brain imaging techniques.

Project

  • Investigation of alterations in brain biochemistry associated with pain following spinal cord injury.
  • Investigation of changes in brain electrical activity in people with neuropathic pain following spinal cord injury.
  • Cortical reorganisation and its association with neuropathic pain following spinal cord injury.

Grants/Awards

  • Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists “Activation of brain regions in people with neuropathic pain following spinal cord injury” A/Prof P Siddall, Dr J Middleton. 2007.
  • NSW Government Spinal Cord Injury Research Grants Program “Pain following spinal cord injury: understanding mechanisms to develop treatments” A/Prof J Keast, Prof M Christie, Dr P Osborne, Prof M Cousins, A/Prof P Siddall; 2005-2008.
